I got up early the next morning, but the woman in front of me was awake again. She was already sitting in the kitchen with a cup of tea in hand.
She greeted me with a cheerful "good morning", got up and got me a cup of tea, then sat down again. I took the cup and sat down across from the old woman on a Suhl, who looked at me again.
"You want to leave," she said, it wasn't a question. I nodded, the woman put her tea aside and gave me a rucksack, it was filled with some blankets, some bread and other food and a full water bottle.
I thanked the old woman profusely, I really appreciated that.I looked at the old woman for a moment and was about to say goodbye to her, but then I remembered an important question that I wanted to ask her the whole time.
"Why did you help me?" I asked her softly. The old woman smiled, I suddenly discovered her age in her eyes, before she had always looked so young.
"I'm an old widow, my children and grandchildren support me, but I have no company, besides, when I was a little younger than you, I did exactly the same thing as you do now, I was also lucky enough to be an old woman has taken in for a while. " she said, also very quietly.
I blushed slightly, was it so obvious that I had run away from home?
I finally said goodbye to myself after thanking them again for their help.
The woman smiled after me as I made my way east, away from the destroyed village and towards the mountains.Soon afterwards I had left the village and was walking across the open field, now and then there were a few trees, sometimes even small groups of trees, but I did not see a forest anywhere.
I kept walking, thinking, I wondered who this man might be, who had been in the right place for the second time at the right time. I wondered if he was of noble origin, such a noble horse was certainly very expensive. I went on in silence, I was lost in my thoughts and didn't really notice how the time went by.
At dawn I went to sleep a little way down the road, and when I woke up the next morning a thin layer of snow covered the ground. It had gotten terribly cold and I shivered and pulled the blankets tighter around me.
I rummaged in my pocket with my fingers, stiff from the cold, and pulled out the water bottle. I took a few swallows and, trembling all over, I packed up my things and went on to get warm again. After two or three hours I stopped and ate something. I was tired, but slowly I got used to the long walks and the blisters on my feet were already disappearing.
I sighed, my hands numb from the cold, even though I rubbed them together almost continuously and breathed on them. I walked on quickly so that I wouldn't freeze any more, on the way I thought about how far I wanted to go before I would look for a village in which I wanted to stay.
It was clear to me that I couldn't go on like this for long, especially the coming winter months would be icy cold. I thought of my parents and my siblings, I wondered how they were doing and what they were doing.
Did they worry? Did you think I was dead long ago?
I stopped my thoughts when I heard a noise. I stopped and listened, the sound didn't stop.
It took me a moment to realize that it was my teeth that were clattering together.I sighed, the sun was going to set soon anyway, so I might as well set up my bed for the night and light a fire to warm myself up again. I walked a little away from the path to a small group of trees, there I gathered some branches and lit a fire, then I put down my backpack and took out the woolen blankets.
I wrapped myself in the blankets and slid close to the fire, I held my hands to the fire and felt how slowly the feeling returned to them. When I stopped shaking so much, I ate and drank, then put everything back in my pocket except for the blankets.
I slid a little closer to the fire, then lay down and closed my eyes, despite the fire it was pretty cold and I was still freezing. After a while I fell asleep trembling.
