She watched with fascination as the colorful autumn leaves played happily with the wind when an angry voice brought her back into the classroom.
"Mrs. Morgan, instead of watching the leaves, could you name the root of 'a'?" Her math teacher asked irritably. Annabelle winced and meekly confessed that she didn't know the answer, to which the teacher, pointing at the blackboard, replied that she should be more careful. A flush of shame rose to her face when she noticed that there, big and clear, was the result. Annabelle tried to concentrate on the lesson again, under the mockery of her classmates. In vain, as her thoughts drifted back to the colorful leaves after a few minutes. So weightless and carefree that just watching it blown away all worries.
Annabelle was torn from her thoughts again, this time by the school bell. Sighing, she got up and packed up her things. Then she left the class and, now that she had finished, went home. In the corridors all eyes were on her. Eyes that told her with every look how worthless she was. Her fists clenched.
Annabelle was a rather nondescript girl, neither overly pretty nor terribly ugly. The fringe of her long, black hair hung low over her face. A holdover from times when her acne was particularly bad.
Still, she was the favorite victim of the school beauty Vanessa Bright. She had just stood in front of her and mocked, grinning: "Well, pimple princess, how are you? Heard you dreamed of your prince again in class. Maybe he has Clearasil!" Everyone around her laughed and Vanessa visibly enjoyed their triumph. Oh, how tired Annabelle was of those pejorative looks. Clenching her fists again, she just tried to keep walking. Just get away, get out of this nightmare! But her opponent blocked her way. "You think you're better, you little bitch.", Vanessa said, disgusted.
Annabelle came from a respected and very wealthy family, but she did not get good grades, nor did she have any talents. She was more of a burden to her parents. A 'shame' as her mother used to put it.
The girl's blood boiled. How gladly would you have slipped her hand! However, there were too many. Anyone standing by would have come to the aid of the would-be Barbie on the spot. The two students exchanged hateful looks when suddenly one was called.
"Vanessa.", Said a young man with an indifferent expression on his face. Immediately the doll came up and all anger was forgotten - for now.
Now the onlookers turned away as if nothing had happened. So gradually the corridor cleared and when Annabelle saw her savior, she felt a dull pain.Jason Karrig, her former best friend and Vanessa's current boyfriend. Your favorite enemy was just about to suckle him off. Annabelle turned away in disgust and stormed outside.
She quickly passed the school yard and leaned exhausted against a tree on the side of the road.
What was the matter with her? She had seen the two of them smooch before! ... But it wasn't really about Jason alone. It was all at once. The house of cards, whose bearers no longer stood, slowly collapsed.
Annabelle heard an approaching hum.
It all seemed so unreal to her.
These were her last thoughts as she stood on the road and looked sadly at the driver.
Her final thoughts before the car swept her away.
"All I ever wished ... is love."
