I ran and ran. My breath was panting. I couldn't keep up this pace for long. I didn't have a chance!
Warm tears slowly crept their way down my cheeks.
Why didn't anyone help me? Where were my parents? My legs hurt. How long have I been running? I did not know it. But I knew one thing, they weren't allowed to get me.
With my tear-veiled eyes I tried to find a hiding place, but it was hopeless. I saw almost nothing. It was a miracle that I had not yet run into one of the numerous trees.
As soon as I had thought through this, I tripped over a root and landed lengthways on the ground. Before I could really get up, they had caught up with me.
The three men wore bright red uniforms. On her chest was a blood-red dragon head that went up in flames. They scowled at me. One of the three snorted contemptuously.
"Pretty nimble the brat! Well, did you think you could just run away?"
Trembling with fear, I stumbled back a few steps. He came up to me and roughly grabbed my arm.
"You're coming with me now. We don't have time to play catch with a little brat like you!"
As soon as his fingers closed around my arm, a throbbing pain ran through my head.
What the … ?
Before I could finish this thought, everything went black around me ...

I groaned and opened my eyes. What happened? My head hurt like hell.
I sat up carefully and reached for my forehead. I paused in mid-motion and stared at my hand in shock.
It was smeared with a red liquid! I quickly jumped up and looked down at myself. All of my clothes were soaked in it. Where did all the blood come from? I searched the surroundings with my shocked eyes and stopped with my gaze on three figures lying in front of me in the leaves.
A scream cut the silence. It took me a few seconds to understand that I was the trigger for this noise. My eyes were still on these figures. They were my pursuers - and terribly beaten. Was that what it looked like if a wild animal had mauled a person?
Again my tears came up and with a panicked sob I started to run.
What was it that happened?
I just wanted to get out of here. In my panic, I stumbled and landed my head on something hard.
Again my eyes went black.

I woke up completely out of breath. That dream again!
It took a moment for me to gradually calm down. My green eyes wandered to the only window in the small room. The clouds were colored a bright red-orange and weak light illuminated the sparsely furnished room. The only things that stood here were a bed and an old wooden chair. The walls were a dirty gray and the floor didn't look much better either.
I sat up slowly, the bed creaking softly. My stomach growled, angry that it hadn't gotten much in a while. Life here was tough and I wasn't very good at helping Elena at the age of twelve.
The good-natured middle-aged woman lived a long way apart from other people and planted herbs here. She was the little town's healer.
However, people rarely came here. When they could, the sick went to the healer in the neighboring village and that was my fault.
People were afraid of me. They believed I was a demon sent to bring them death and destruction. I knew that sounded crazy and I had no idea how they came up with it. Elena found me covered in blood in the forest a good eight years ago and has taken care of me ever since. She never wanted to tell me what had happened then. I was smeared with blood from top to bottom, but I hadn't suffered any injuries.
Again my thoughts wandered to the dream. I've had it for over a week. Did it mean something?
I couldn't remember anything that had happened before my time with Elena. I didn't know where I came from or what about my parents. Did they still live? Maybe they cared about me, missed me? I quickly shook off these thoughts and got up.
After I got dressed, I went out of the room. The adjoining room was a bit bigger, but it looked no better than the first. There weren't many pieces of furniture here either. Just an old table, two more chairs, a small cupboard, a small stove and in a corner were a few blankets on which Elena always slept.
We only had one bed and she really wanted to leave that to me. The bed was actually for the patients, but as long as there weren't any, someone else might as well sleep in it.
Yawning, I sat down at the table and looked at the small breakfast that Elena had probably put out for me. It consisted only of a slice of bread and a mug of water. That was the only thing I would get by tonight. My stomach growled again. Sighing, I bit into my bread and slowly chewed on it.
Thoughtfully, I looked out the window and watched a few birds that flew cheerfully from one tree to another and literally danced around each other. My gaze wandered to the sun, which rose higher and higher. I still had to go to town and run some errands there. I promised Elena.
I finished my bread, finished my water and put away my plate and mug. Then I grabbed the basket that was on the floor and the small bag of coins that was hidden in the closet and ran outside.
Elena was sitting on the bed in front of our house, planting a few new herbs and pulling out unwanted weeds. When she heard the door slam, she looked up briefly and a warm smile spread across her lips.
"Good morning, Leyla! Already awake?", She asked while she tried to tie her auburn hair with a ribbon.
I noticed a grin spreading on my face and replied: "I'm going into town and I'll be back in two hours at the latest."
I turned my back on her.
"Oh what! You don't need to hurry. I'll be through here in a minute and then have nothing more to do for the rest of the day. You can also be out and about all day. Just be here again this evening before sunset, please."
"All right, I'll do it. See you later!"
And then I was gone into the surrounding forest.

I walked slowly through the trees. The light of the sun shimmered greenish through the canopy and above me a squirrel scurried quickly from branch to branch.
I sniffed the early autumn air. It smelled of damp foliage since it had rained last night, and I could make out a deer a few meters to my right. Yes, it was strange how much I perceived in contrast to other people.
I could smell things that a person normally couldn't. I could see things that a person could only make out many meters, if not kilometers, away. I could hear much better.
Sometimes I wondered if the people here weren't right after all. In a way, at least. What if I really wasn't a normal person, but something else?
Not necessarily a demon. No. I didn't believe in it. Well, who would think that of themselves?
At moments like these, I always thought a lot about who or what I was, where I came from or who my parents were and why they weren't the ones who cared about me. I would love to know the answers to these questions. The only thing I knew was my name.
Leyla.
Although I wasn't quite sure either. It was just the first thing that occurred to me when I asked my name.
It wasn't long before I left the labyrinth of trees and stepped with my feet on a solid, dry path. The rustling of the leaves under my feet subsided and at the same time other noises faded away.
I could move so calmly that even a cat wouldn't notice me, even if I was right behind it.

Gradually I saw the first houses with their dirty red-brown roofs and heard a few people talking to each other. When I entered the small town everyone stared at me. They were scornful looks. Looks you wouldn't even give a rat. But I was already used to that. I could now ignore those looks and the feeling of worthlessness that came over me every time.
I went on with determination. A couple of children, who were about my age, stopped and one of them shouted: "Get out of here! We don't want a hell brood like you in our city!"
Immediately, all the adults in the area took a sharp breath and stared at me with fear and expectation. I just gave the boy a venomous look and then just kept walking. I wouldn't let myself down to his level that easily and as long as they weren't physical, I saw no reason to react.
I quickened my pace and walked purposefully towards the marketplace. Gradually the houses got bigger and nicer. The red-brown roofs were almost like new and the house facades were kept in a clean light gray.
The large, red-brown church stood directly on the market square and the town hall opposite. The large square was full of people who advertised their wares at the numerous stalls.
To my right, a few people were playing their musical instruments, hoping for a few coins so they could afford their next meal. In the middle of the square was a large fountain from which some women were fetching water.
But I wasn't interested in any of that, because I wanted to get out of here as soon as possible. I didn't feel comfortable in the midst of such crowds.
With quick steps I headed for a stand to do my errands and then quickly get out of here.

Finally out of here! I let out a sigh of relief.
As soon as I got down from the market square, I was feeling much better. Maybe that was stressful!
These brazen dealers had tried the whole time to fool me and to sell me the goods completely overpriced. Gradually it was enough for me how I was treated by the people here. What gave them the right to judge other people they didn't even know?
Completely lost in thought, I did not notice that the children from before were back. Something hard hit me in the back of the knee and my leg buckled. With a startled cry, I landed on the stony ground and the basket hit me.
What the…? I carefully got up again and looked around searching. First I noticed the stone just behind me and then I saw the group. The oldest of them laughed at me. Apparently he had thrown me.
Now it was
