Soft music rang out in the nicely furnished room, only now and then it was interrupted by soft sobs. 15-year-old Maya Kudo was lying on the bed, looking sadly at the picture of a young woman and a little boy, her mother and her 12-year-old brother Jan. Maya remembered when the photo was taken; that was on her birthday last month. As the world was still in order. The girl still couldn't quite understand what had happened that day two weeks ago. Her mother and brother were on their way to see Maya's father, who was working in Japan, when the plane caught fire and crashed into the sea. None of the passengers survived. The tears ran down Maya's cheeks when there was a sudden knock on the door. The girl quickly wiped her eyes with her hand. She had to be strong, her mother would have wanted that too.

The door opened and the mother of her friend Karin came in: "Maya, your taxi has just come. Hurry up!" Maya nodded and stood up: "I'll be right there." She took her bag and left the room. The girl went slowly down the stairs. Karin was already standing there to say goodbye. The farewell was short and warm. Then Maya got into the taxi that was supposed to take her to the airport. Their suitcases had been sent the day before. Maya should finally get to know her father's country, she had grown up in Germany because her mother was German. The girl did not think that she should go to her father, Keiichi Kudo, and stay there in Japan. Maya hadn't seen her father in 10 years. Keiichi was an archaeologist by profession and worked as a director at the National Museum in Tokyo.

The drive to the airport did not take long and within half an hour Maya was on the plane to Tokyo. During the flight, the girl wondered what her father was like. She didn't have very many memories of him anymore. Because she was half Japanese, she was often teased in school because of her Asian facial features. “Slowly I have to stop living in the past”, Maya said to herself, “everything will definitely be all right again!” She looked out the window when she suddenly noticed that there was a boy who was just as old on the seat in front of her was like her. When the boy called the stewardess, their eyes met accidentally. Maya felt herself blush, somehow she was embarrassed because her first thought was: "Wow, it looks good!" "Hi, my name is Chiaki Yamamoto and what's your name?" said the boy to her. "Maya Kudo, nice to meet you." "May I sit down with you or is it already occupied?" Chiaki asked and pointed to the free space next to Maya."No, there is still free."

So the girl finally got other thoughts. Time flew by and when the stewardess announced the landing approach, only a few minutes seemed to have passed. Maya and Chiaki said goodbye to each other at Tokyo Airport. The girl looked after the boy a little longer and wondered if she would see him again. With a sigh, the girl turned and headed for the taxi rank. Maya got into a car that was supposed to take her to the museum.

“There's the National Museum,” said the driver when the taxi stopped in front of a large building, “that'll be 1900 yen.” Maya paid the fare and got out.
There she stood with her bag in her hand and brushed a strand of hair from her face. Maya took a deep breath and entered the museum. She went to information. Once there, she asked the receptionist where she could find her father. "Kudo-sama's office is in the western annex, this way," she said, showing Maya the direction to go.The girl thanked her and started on her way. Maya walked slowly past the exhibits. Her father's job seemed very interesting.

Now she was standing in front of her father's office. She took another deep breath and knocked. "Come in," said a voice from the room. Maya opened the door carefully. Her father sat behind a large desk, completely absorbed in his work. He still looked the way she remembered him: nice and loving, with his short black hair and his friendly smile. "Hello Dad," began Maya, "nice to see you again." "Maya-chan, there you are," with these words Keiichi stood up and hugged his daughter warmly. "I didn't expect you so early. Otherwise I would have picked you up from the airport. Please sit down." Maya sat down on the seat offered to her when suddenly the phone rang. Keiichi also sat down and picked up the phone. After greeting the person he was speaking to, he turned pale as a sheet.Maya looked at her father in amazement, something seemed to have happened, something very bad. Her father had hardly hung up when he jumped up and said: "Wait here for me!" ran out. Maya was now sitting alone in the office and wondered what might have happened. Curious girl got up and walked around the desk. She glanced at what her father had worked so hard on. She saw a goblet with strange signs that seemed to come from another time. The goblet looked somehow familiar to Maya, as if she had seen it before. As if in a trance, the girl took the goblet in her hands and raised it high above her head. Suddenly it seemed to her as if a long repressed memory would find its way into consciousness. She saw a large, ornate room. That struck her as strangely familiar. A voice said to her: "Only you can help us, Your Highness!"
That was too much! Maya dropped the goblet in shock. What was that all about? Somehow it sounded so familiar to her and yet Maya suddenly got really scared. It seemed as if the chalice had called them. "But that's total nonsense!" Maya said to herself and sat down again. Her heart was pounding wildly, but after several deep breaths, she had calmed down again.
Then her father came back too. "The lock of the camp had been broken open, the rooms had been ransacked; but luckily nothing is missing. Come on, let's go home. You will be tired and your room is already waiting for you." Keiichi took Maya by the hand and brought her to his Automobile. Maya let her thoughts wander: "I don't tell Dad about my fantasies, otherwise he'll just worry unnecessarily. I just need some sleep!" With these thoughts she finally fell asleep on the way home.

Maya didn't know, but her greatest adventure had just begun!
