Fanfic: Slipped Away

Chapter: Slipped away

I miss you
I miss you so bad
I don't forget you
Oh it's so sad

The rain pounded on their windows, it thundered outside and lightning lit the dark apartment. Besides the lightning, the only source of light was the fire in the fireplace. Miwako Sato stared into the fire as if looking for the answers to her questions in the flames. A big hole gaped in her heart.

I hope you can her me
I remember it clearly

Screams, gunshots, and voices mingled in her head until she couldn't tell one from the other. She couldn't sleep because it would all come back and never go away.

The day you slipped away
What the day I found
It won't be the same
Oh

~ FLASHBACK ~

"He won't be out anytime soon, Inspector.", Miwako said, her head resting on the passenger seat. The surveillance had been going on for five hours, and her legs were gradually falling asleep.

"We'll stay here anyway.", Megure replied. "How are things going with Takagi?"Miwako smiled at the thought. They had been together for almost two years and Wataru recently moved in with her.

"It couldn't be better."

"Nice to hear that," said Megure.

Then they continued to watch the suspect. Half an hour later the inspector decided to drive back to the presidium. On the way back they heard Chiba's voice over the radio.

"Shots have been fired! Need reinforcements!" Chiba shouted. In the background they heard more shots fire.

Megure turned the car and drove to the whereabouts of Chiba and Takagi. It wasn't long before they heard Chiba again.

"A policeman was shot! We need an ambulance! And where the hell are the reinforcements ?!"

Miwako held his breath and prayed that Wataru wasn't the policeman who was shot when Megure drove even faster to be there faster.

Miwako got up from the couch and went into the bedroom. She changed and went to bed. Tomorrow she would go back to work, but her eyes refused to close.

~ FLASHBACK ~

Megure stopped, but Miwako was outside before the car's engine stopped. She looked around for Wataru but did not find him. She spotted Chiba and ran over to him.

"Chiba! Where is ..." She stopped in mid-sentence when she saw that his shirt was covered in blood. "No no…"

"I'm so sorry, Miwako," said Chiba, confirming what she was already afraid of.

Behind him, Miwako saw a sheet covering a body. She sobbed when she realized that Wataru was under the sheet. She tried to get to him, but Chiba held her. Miwako tried to free himself from him, but he didn't let go.

"Wataru! Wataru!" She cried. She continued to fight Chiba, kicking and punching him, but her strength ran out and she collapsed crying in his arms.

~ END FLASHBACK ~

I hope can hear me
I remember it clearlyA tear ran down her face and Miwako made no move to wipe it away. All she'd done for the past month was cry. Sometimes she found herself talking to him like he was still here. As if Wataru hadn't really left her.

The day you went away
What the day I found
It won't be the same
Oh

~ FLASHBACK ~

Miwako took a step forward and placed a white rose on his tombstone. She wiped away her tears.

"Hey, Wataru." she whispered. “I miss you, but you probably know that.” She took a deep breath before continuing. "I'm sorry I wasn't with you ... when you were shot." She looked over at Chiba and her other colleagues who were waiting for her. "I ... I just wanted to tell you that I won't say goodbye now, Wataru."

~ END FLASHBACK ~

I've had my wake up
Won't you wake up
I keep asking why
And I can't take it
It wasn't fake it
It happened you passed by

Miwako took a deep breath before entering her department. Her eyes automatically wandered to Wataru's desk, which was now empty. In her mind's eye she saw him working there and then he turned to her smiling. Tears welled up in her eyes and she would have collapsed if Chiba hadn't come.

"Hey," he whispered and hugged her. "How are you?"

"I miss him.", Miwako sighed.

"I know we all do."

"Miwako, how are you?" Asked Inspector Megure, who appeared behind Chiba.

"I'm okay, inspector."

"I just wanted to say that today the new superintendent is coming to, um, to replace Takagi.", Megure said, watching Miwako's reaction.

Miwako froze. Wataru ... replace? She quickly apologized and then went to the break room.

Now you're gone
Now you're gone
There you go
There you go
Somewhere I can't bring you back

Everything was spinning in Miwako's head when she walked into the break room. A new commissioner would replace Wataru. Until now she hadn't really dealt with the fact that Wataru was dead. But now reality hit her like a vice.

Suddenly something made a 'click' in her. She sobbed and tears ran down her face as anger struck her. She grabbed a chair and tossed it across the room.

Now you're gone
Now you're gone
There you go
There you go
Somewhere you're not coming back

Chiba was rummaging through an old file when e heard something break in the break room. He dropped the file, ran over and found the room in a mess ... and Miwako in the middle of it. Her eyes were red from crying and she looked totally exhausted.

Carefully, Chiba made her way through the broken glass over to Miwako. When he touched her arm she looked at him as if she were awakening from a daze. Tears fell again. He hugged her and made her cry on his shoulder.

The day you slipped away
What the day I found
It won't be the same
Oh

"He's dead, Chiba. He's really dead.", Miwako cried.

"Miwako," he said gently.

"Until now, I just didn't want it to be true."she kept crying." I miss him. Why did he have to go? Why did he have to leave me ?! "

Chiba's heart broke when he heard Miwako's question that no one could answer.

"I don't know, Miwako. I don't know."

I miss you
