When I heard Claire whisper my name softly, my eyes became clear again.
My eyes widened in shock when I saw what I was doing.
I carefully pulled my fangs from Claire's throat and, disgusted with myself, swallowed the blood that was left in my mouth.
I carefully wrapped Claire in my cloak and placed her on the straw mattress.
I felt her sweet blood flow through my veins, felt the warmth return to my body with him, but it felt wrong.
What was otherwise so natural and normal now made me feel sick. Sure, I hadn't drank too much, but the mere fact that I'd hurt her made me angry at myself. It had been ages since I accidentally hurt someone, even if I had to admit that someone's life was going to take me hardly cared after all these years and centuries in which I have now been feeding on them. But it was different with Claire.
I listened to her heartbeat, it was steady, even if it no longer sounded so terribly loud in my ears, I heard it clearly. She was pale, but her breathing was normal, as if she was sleeping.
Even though it was unnecessary, since I could hear her heart beating, I carefully put two fingers to her neck and felt her pulse. He was normal too, but I was worried about Claire.
My gaze rested on her, I was terribly angry with myself that I had injured her, I clenched my teeth and clenched my fists, hardly felt how my jaw started to hurt and also the warm blood that was pouring out of the I didn't even notice the wounds that my fingernails caused in my palms and that slowly dripped onto the floor next to me.
I eyed Claire, her black hair that reached just below her chest hiding the bite wounds on her neck that I had inflicted on her, but I was painfully aware that they were there.
Now, after drinking from her, I felt better, and that was exactly why I felt bad at the same time. I sighed and carefully brushed a strand of matted hair from her face, my hand leaving a bloody trail on her face, and only now did I notice that I was bleeding.
I looked at my torn palms for a moment, and as I looked at them, the wounds healed. I dropped my hands again and looked at Claire.
She had the typical look of a farmer's wife, not overly groomed and her dress looked like it had been patched many times, it was already quite frayed at the bottom and her shoes didn't look new either. Even if you wouldn't take her for a noblewoman, she was still pretty.
Not only was she pretty, her blood was without a doubt one of the best I've tasted so far.
It was dangerous for Claire to stay with me, I realized. I had found a taste for her blood, and it couldn't possibly go well in the long run. Maybe I should only accompany her to the next village ... but I didn't want to leave her alone, especially since there were many werewolves in this area. She certainly wouldn't survive an encounter alone, and it would be worse if she did.She was going to become a werewolf, and I would let that be even less than her death.
No, I wouldn't leave her alone, I just couldn't bring myself to do that. If we just left this area behind us as quickly as possible, then everything would be fine. I was confident.
I looked at Claire again, she was special, and not just because her blood had that special smell and taste. No, the special thing was how she treated me, even though she knew what I was.
She had never shown fear of me, always just curiosity. Even when I took the form of a wolf right in front of her eyes, she didn't fear me. She had been scared, but it wasn't me, but the werewolves. Not even when I growled at her to keep the gate closed she was afraid of me. She had been frightened, but that was all. Not the slightest bit of fear.
Even now, when she slowly opened her eyes and looked up at me with a veiled look, she didn't seem to be afraid.
I eyed Claire worriedly, she blinked briefly, then her gaze was clear again and she looked at me with her big brown eyes, with the same attentive look that I was used to from her. I sighed softly, relieved.
I was glad she was awake and seemed to be fine.
