Past

It was calm and peaceful, a light breeze was blowing through the forest, the birds were singing their songs and a brook babbling peacefully behind the trees. When suddenly a bang broke the silence and echoed through the forest. A young woman ran through the forest in fear, she looked around in all directions. She ran as fast as her wounded foot would allow, but she knew that her pursuers were getting closer and closer to her. The pain was almost unbearable, but she ran faster. She ran past trees, stones and forest animals, which immediately fled. But she stumbled over a tree root sticking out of the ground and fell full length, she tried to catch herself with her hand, but her wrist cracked. Despite everything, she got up and ran on, careful to keep the broken wrist steady. After a few meters the forest became lighter, and instead of moss and fern she was now walking over stones, earth and here and there some grass. With her pursuers close behind her neck, she ran straight ahead and stumbled over loose stones. Her breath came in gusts and she felt as if she was suffocating, but still she didn't allow herself a break. But then her path ended, she was standing on a large cliff, from which a waterfall fell 50 meters down, in a lake that was teeming with sharp rocks. She looked down and then looked back. Her pursuers were only 20 meters away. She thought only briefly, then she made up her mind. She looked up at the sky and smiled, then, when the pursuers were only a meter away and she could already smell the horses' sweat, she jumped down into the depths.
