It had been five years now and nothing had changed. At least nothing that you would notice immediately. The relentless war against Naraku and the completion of Shiko no Tama was still raging. Suffering, mourning and anger still permeated the country and kept people and demons alike in suspense.
Kagome sighed and brushed a few long strands of dark hair from her face as she walked next to Kirara and after Miroku, Sango and Inuyasha. "Are you tired?", She heard the childlike voice of Shippou next to her. The little Kizune sat on her shoulder and looked questioningly at the Miko. This was one of the changes in her life. For some time now, Shippou, whom she saw as her adopted son, worried more about her than she cared about him. Kagome gave him a warm smile and shook his head. "No, I was just thinking.", The fox demon gave her a skeptical look and seemed to study her for a moment before crossing his small arms in front of his chest and nodding. "Well otherwise Kirara would have carried you or Inuyasha!", Addressed Hanyou turned around and raised an eyebrow. "Why don't you wear her Shippou? It's about time you grew up, but you just don't seem to want to grow!", Miko knew that Inuyasha had to suppress a grin. He was only too happy to tease the Kizune with its size, but didn't really mean it. In a strange way, that's probably part of his charm. But before it could degenerate into an argument, Sango spoke up: "Come on, guys, if I start the fight now you are more tired than we humans!", Sango laughed with her clear voice and Miroku joined in too .
It was a calm and relaxing day. One of those who the group really appreciated, because the closer they got to the remaining jewel shards, the rarer these moments became. The tension grew from day to day from hour to hour and the question arose more and more often how it would end. Could you win? Hadn't Naraku gained too much power? And what if they survived and the journey finally came to an end? Kagome's heart contracted. The Sendgoku Jidai had become their home. She had dropped out of school and talked with her family for a long time about what was happening and what they wanted. She couldn't imagine never going back here and never seeing her friends or family again. Of course, her real family was in Tokyo in modern times, but deep down she knew that she no longer belonged there. So what if once the jewel was completed it took them back to their time and there was no going back? She quickly drove the thought away. There was nothing to worry about, she would only get an answer when the time came.
The clear blue of the sky slowly closed with dark clouds and the small group decided to look for a shelter. Rain would come, if not a storm. Shortly before they discovered a small cave, the first lightning flashed across the sky and bathed the afternoon sky in a harsh light. The dark clouds made it seem like it was late in the evening and the beginning rain took away the previously clear view. Kagome gathered up branches that were lying around and brought them to Miroku, who began to prepare a fireplace. When warm firelight illuminated the cave and the warmth heated up the clammy clothes, Kagome ran to the cave entrance. Inuyasha stared out into the rain, scanning the area vigilantly. The miko knew he was seething. He too didn't want to wait any longer and finally get the fight that was going on behind him. Gingerly she put a hand on the hanyou's shoulder. "Take a rest, the last few weeks have been very exhausting. Sooner or later he will no longer be able to hide from us!", Amber-colored eyes met fawns with quiet understanding. All the time they had already traveled around together they had deeply connected and often they understood each other without words. Of course, as in the past, there were still arguments with them, which ended with Inuyasha either disappearing into the trees or lying in a ditch one meter deep. But they both got older and he had learned to accept Kagome and not only as an instrument to search for the Shiko no Tama splinters. As for the miko's feelings, however, it was a lot more complicated. She knew that part of his heart still loved Kikyou and recognized this in her. This made it hard for her to give whatever was between them a real chance. Definitely in the past, but now after five years and many experiences later, she didn't want to spend the remaining time loving someone who she might only see as a substitute or whom she never saw again after the jewel was complete again.
Kagome's gaze also slid out into the rain. The trees, rocks and mountains in the distance could only be seen vaguely, but the steady patter of the drops calmed her mind. "What will you do when we have the jewel?" Inuyasha had never had the courage to ask Kagome this question before. He didn't want to hear that she was going back in time and going on with her real life. He cared a lot about Miko and found it difficult to imagine a future without her. His gaze slid over her slim figure. Her hair had grown longer and fell almost to her thin hips. Her features were no longer so rounded, but fine and narrow. Nothing remembered the fifteen-year-old girl who, out of sheer curiosity, had freed him from the 1000-year-old tree and ignorantly carried the jewel of the four souls. Her posture was also straight and alert in a way, always ready to defend herself, and yet her movements were light and graceful. The Hanyou's head tilted slightly to one side and he slowly raised his left arm behind her back. Just as he was about to give her a slap on the back of the head, she caught it cleverly with one hand and looked at him with a smile. "What should that be for now?" She asked curiously. However, he just shrugged his shoulders and replied: "Oh, you were so out of the way, I just wanted to bring you back into the present." Inuyasha grinned and released his arm from her grip. Yes, nothing more about Kagome was juvenile and careless. However, this fact also made him a little sad, he had the dull feeling that he was hanging after her and, unlike her, had not changed at all. He was her protector and he was much older on top of that. Puffing, he sat down by the fire between Miroku and Shippou.
Kagome watched the half-demon just shaking his head and then turned back to the never-ending rain. Of course she had heard Inuyasha's question before, but if she was honest she didn't know exactly what to answer him. It had been easier to pretend she didn't understand. Movement outside in the rain prevented Kagome from pursuing this idea any further. Tense, she narrowed her eyes a little to be able to see better. The figure was small and she only recognized individual spots of color. A crash from the woods behind the unknown figure made her heart beat faster. Moments later, her friends were next to her. "Youkai ...", the white-haired Hanyou mumbled and felt for the handle of Tessaiga. The others also had their weapons ready, but did not leave the cave until they could find out more. Again there was a loud crash from the forest. Cracking and breaking whole tree trunks and mud splashing up to the cave made the Miko take a step backwards. What was that? A frightened whimper made Kagome look away from the floor and she quickly searched for the small figure that was nothing more than a blob of paint in the rain. Soft calls, the content of which one could not understand over the roar of the rain and the destruction of the trees. She knew that voice. Loud battle cries followed. She also knew this, but Sango pronounced it: "Shichinintai!"
Only a moment later they recognized the flash of Jakotsuto from Jakotsu, which was plowing through the not yet destroyed plants and woods as if they were only made of paper. If Jakotsu was here, then the others couldn't be far. "Help ... please ... Sesshoumaru-sama!", It hit Kagome like a punch in the stomach. Rin! Just as she was about to take a step outside, a gigantic youkai broke out of the darkness of the forest and shook the earth. The miko almost fell to the ground as a result of the quake, but caught herself at the last moment and stared up at the monster in shock. On its head there were horns as big as Kagome himself, it hardly had a face, only dark caves which stared at you in a glowing red and something like tusks which protruded from its dripping mouth. It stank of sulfur and death, as if it had rotten. His arms were thick and enclosed by steel rings and his claws were clenched into fists with which he hit Jakotsu and hurled his weapon like a toy. If Kagome had to guess she would say he's about 10 to 20 meters tall. When the monster turned around, she saw smoking spikes sticking out of his spine and seeming to glow. He dealt another blow in the direction of the Shichinitai, but this went wrong and made the earth shake once more and the group struggled for their balance. "What the hell is that?", Miroku asked the question that was on the tip of everyone's tongue. But now there was no time to look for an answer. Rin was out there. Alone and full of fear. Where was Sesshoumaru and his henchman Jaken?
The Miko looked around frantically, but saw no one except Jakotsu who, on closer inspection, looked a little battered. The black-haired woman bit her lower lip firmly and fought down the paralyzing fear. Now or never. Just as the youkai had targeted Jakotsu one more time, Kagome ran off, ignoring the calls of her friends and always careful not to slip in the mud. Only a few meters away she saw the trembling girl on the ground behind a tree trunk that looked like a broken match. "Rin! Over here!", When the little girl recognized the voice
